Glomfjord power plant

Norway / Hydropower / Power plant

Glomfjord power plant is located in Meløy Municipality in Nordland County.

  • 1920
    Entered into operation
  • 20 MW
    Installed capacity
  • 91.5 GWh
    Annual production

The power plant is built above ground and originally had six generating units with vertical Pelton turbines. Only one of the original units is still in operation due to reduced water flow.

The first construction phase of Glomfjord power plant with three generating units was completed in 1920. The last three units were commissioned after World War II. The entire project was completed in 1950.

As a result of the Svartisen development in the 1990s, water flow to the plant was reduced. Only one of the six original generating units was rebuilt and modernised and is still in operation. Three of the newest units were dismantled and removed after a comprehensive historical documentation of the facility was completed.

In recent times a new mini generating unit was installed in Glomfjord's machine room to harness the height of fall from nearby Lake Fykanvann.

During World War II, on 20 September 1942, the penstocks and turbine room at Glomfjord power plant were blown up during an Allied sabotage operation known as Operation Musketoon. This succeeded in stopping the power supply so that the German military had to abandon their plans to increase aluminium production at the plants in Haugvik.

Glomfjord power plant has the status of a national heritage site. It is proposed that the facility be protected in Statkraft's national protection plan for cultural heritage buildings.
